They steal our socks, take up far too much of the sofa and greet us like we’ve been away for three years when we’ve only popped out for milk. But behind those lovable antics, dogs have some pretty remarkable talents.
Here are ten facts to make you look at your furry friend a little differently.
1. Every nose is one of a kind
A dog’s nose print is unique, much like a human fingerprint. That little nose nudging your hand for another biscuit? An original masterpiece.
2. Their noses are seriously impressive
Dogs can have up to 300 million scent receptors. Suddenly, spending five minutes investigating one fence post seems quite reasonable. There’s clearly a lot to unpack.
3. Dogs dream too
Those little sleepy paw movements might be part of a dream. We can’t know what they’re dreaming about, but we rather like the idea of a squirrel finally admitting defeat.
4. They can be left- or right-pawed
Some dogs favour one paw over the other. Watch which one yours uses when tackling a puzzle toy—you might have a little leftie in the family.
5. Their hearing reaches beyond ours
Dogs can hear higher-pitched and quieter sounds than we can. Which makes their ability to hear a rustling treat packet from another room rather less mysterious.
6. They don’t see everything in black and white
Dogs can see colours, particularly blues and yellows, although their colour vision differs from ours. Their world has more colour than that old myth suggests!
7. Dogs sweat through their paw pads
They have sweat glands in their paw pads, but mainly cool themselves by panting. Tiny sweaty feet: an unexpectedly relatable detail about our canine companions.
8. Some dogs yodel
Basenjis are famous for their unusual yodel-like sounds. Why settle for an ordinary bark when you could bring a little musical flair to the household?
9. Their ears have a whole team of muscles
Dogs have around 18 muscles helping move their ears. Those expressive little swivels take more behind-the-scenes work than you might think.
10. Newfoundlands have worked as water rescue dogs
These big, fluffy dogs have a remarkable history of helping people in the water. One Newfoundland, Whizz, received a PDSA award after saving nine people during his rescue career. A very good boy indeed.
At Grrowlingly Purrfect, we love getting to know the personalities behind the paws—from the enthusiastic explorers to the dogs who turn every greeting into a full-body wiggle.
Which of these facts surprised you most? And does your dog have a quirky talent of their own?
One clever nose, one cheeky tongue and a whole lot of personality!
