The suitcase is out, your dog is watching suspiciously, and you’re wondering where they’ll stay while you’re away. Somewhere they’ll feel comfortable—and where their impressive collection of little quirks will be understood.
You’ll often see “home boarding” and “kennels” mentioned, but what’s the difference?
Home boarding: a stay in someone’s home
With home boarding, your dog stays in a carer’s home. They’ll spend their visit in a household setting, with everyday company and a routine agreed around their needs. They may share the home with other dogs, so it’s worth asking who their holiday companions will be.
For dogs who enjoy home comforts and human company, this can be a lovely option. Especially those who consider supervising household activities a full-time job.
Kennels: accommodation designed for dogs
Kennels usually provide individual sleeping accommodation, with exercise and care delivered by staff throughout the day. Some offer private runs, play sessions and extra enrichment, though facilities and routines vary.
A well-run kennel can suit some dogs very well. Ask about time outside their accommodation, individual attention and overnight supervision so you know what their stay will look like.
Which is right for your dog?
Think about their personality. Do they enjoy other dogs, or prefer their own space? Are they comfortable somewhere new? What helps them settle?
Visit beforehand, check licensing and insurance, and ask about routines, medication and emergency arrangements. A trial stay can also help you and the carer see how your dog feels before a longer visit.
